0 24

Clarkesville, Ga. - This past Thursday, the men's and women's golf teams traveled to Clarkesville, GA to compete in a spring day match hosted by Truett McConnell University at Apple Mountain Golf Club. The 18-hole event was the first in a series of matches that Truett's head coach Steve Patton and Montreat's head coach John Sullivan plan to make an annual off-season event each semester. Other schools in attendance were Bryan College, Piedmont College, and the University of North Georgia.

Leading the men was Seth Perry who fired a -2 par round of 70 to record his lowest collegiate round to date. Micah Woolard posted a very tidy even par round of 72, while Duncan Moody, Andrew Stewart and Jacob Shamblin all recorded rounds of 74. Brandon Mathis rounded out the scoring for the men with a 3 over par 75.

The total team score of 291 was a new school record for the young Cavaliers, improving upon their previous record of 299 by eight strokes posted in the fall. Other scores included for the men were Austin Walker (80) and Paul Young (82).

The match also saw several Lady Cavs qualify for the All-Tournament Team including Savannah Kummelman with an 85, Emma Roberts with an 86, and Bridgette Smith with an 86. Sara Gwillim was the low score for the day with a 73, in a round highlighted by two birdies and an eagle. Sydney Fairchild posted her new collegiate low round of 81. Other notable scores for the ladies were Whitney Kincaid (88) and Maddison Hayes (93).

"Today was all about having fun," said Coach Sullivan. "The whole reason for these matches is to get our teams together and just have some friendly competition. The course was set up fairly easy so we knew there were going to be some low scores, but it's like I told our team, you still have to hit good shots and make the putts. We love playing with Truett. They've got a great group of kids so it made for an enjoyable day for all. This was a good confidence builder for us as we head into our home tournament this coming week."

Up Next: The Cavs are at home next week as they host several NAIA schools for the Cavalier Spring Invitational at Broadmoor Golf Links in Fletcher, N.C. on Monday and Tuesday. First round tee times will begin at 9 a.m. Monday.
