[Women's Golf] Women's golf fights weather to finish seventh at Converse Invite
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Lady Cavs women's golf team continued their South Carolina swing as they traveled to Spartanburg to compete in the Converse College Spring Invitational at The Carolina Country Club Monday and Tuesday. The two-day affair saw a drastic change in weather over the course of the event, with the team unable to get a practice round in on Sunday. The tournament was also the second NCAA event the ladies have competed in thus far.
Leading the women after the first round was Sara Gwillim, who posted an 81 that left her T-10th. Bridgette Smith tied her career-low round with a first day score of 85. Sydney Fairchild improved by 10 strokes on day two with an 85 to post the low team score for the day. The Lady Cavs finished seventh as a team, besting NCAA schools North Greenville University and Emmanuel College.
"The conditions this week with the rain, cold temps, and sleet were probably the worst we've ever played in," said head coach John Sullivan. "We put ourselves in position to make a run after the first day, but the weather took a turn for the worst about halfway through the second round and just continued to get worse as the day progressed. The scores on the second day are in no way indicative of what we're capable of. I'm really proud of the girls for fighting through the day, as it was pretty miserable out there."
Up Next: The ladies have the next week off as they prepare for their home event at Broadmoor Golf Links in Fletcher, N.C. March 4 and 5.
