Stones occur naturally in the underlying sand of links course and in quarried sand. Many clubs cannot afford to pay for sand to be sieved before delivery. Pro tours never have stones in the bunkers. The sand has been sieved if it is not artificial.
However, how often do you stand in front of another player who is playing from a bunker? And what real damage is done to a club in hitting a small pebble? Surely no mare than taking divots.
" Pro tours never have stones in the bunkers."  Really?? You seem to be very sure about that so when was last time you were inside the ropes to know that?  I tell you for me it's about 2hrs ago and there were lot of one inch stones in bunkers and created one double for player.
