2019 Rules Discussions •
In another Rules group, we had a similar situation like this offered up as an example for how you may end up correctly playing a ball from outside a Relief Area after dropping. Borrowing Mike's image, and only discussing ball B, the NPCR is a few inches up the side of the bank depicted on the left. So that is the spot you need to work with as the reference point for the RA. The RA is measured by a club-length and naturally follows the contours of the ground. So the RA also lies on the nearly vertical face depicted. The basic procedure, as outlined in R14.3c(2), has the player drop and drop again then place and place again, then failing to stay put, find the nearest spot (no limit) where it will remain at rest (see 14.2e). This will likely be on the top of the vertical face. Even though this final point of placement is possibly going to end up further away from the right side relief and also be outside the original RA, this is what is required.
