[Golf] Shamblin, Kummelman lead Cavs at Mars Hill Intercollegiate

FLETCHER, N.C. – On Monday, Sept. 24, the men's and women's golf teams traveled to Broadmoor Golf Links in Fletcher to compete in the second annual Mars Hill Intercollegiate. After a solid start on day one, second-round play on Tuesday was cancelled due to rain.

Jacob Shamblin (SO/Matthews, NC) led the men with a first round score of 75 to finish T-6th overall, securing his second top 10 finish. Caleb Moss (FR/Franklin, NC) was close behind with a +4 score of 76, while Teddy Bartholomew (SO/Cary, NC) closed with a 77. Andrew Stewart (JR/Alexander, NC) and Micah Woolard (SO/Asheboro, NC) rounded out the scoring for Cavs with a pair of 78s. The men finished third overall.

On the women's side, Savannah Kummelman (SO/Plant City, FL) led the Lady Cavs with a 79 on day one, and tied her collegiate low for a T-13th finish. Sydney Fairchild (SO/Gadsden, AL) also posted an 84. Bridgette Smith (SO/Newland, NC) posted her new collegiate low with an 87, giving her a 25th place finish. The women finished fifth in a field of eight teams.

"Conditions were tough this week, but we are trending in the right direction," said head coach John Sullivan. "All five of our guys posted scores in the 70s, so that's a positive to take away. We are seeing our scoring averages continue to drop, but we just need to continue to eliminate careless mistakes here and there. I'm very proud of our girls as well. I'm disappointed play was cancelled on day two as we had some great momentum building."
