Tour Championship 2018 purse: Winner’s payout is $1.6 million in prize money

0 29

Tiger is about to cash another massive winner’s check and some sweet FedExCup bonus cash.

Tiger Woods is the all-time money leader in golf with $124,303,661 in career on-course earnings. That on-course distinction is important because he has obviously made many more millions and millions of dollars off the course through endorsement deals the last two decades.

So he’s not exactly playing for a winner’s payout at this point, but he’s probably going to get another nice boost to that career tally on Sunday night. Tiger is running away with the Tour Championship in Atlanta, the season finale at East Lake. That’s the spot where he’s won two overall FedExCup titles to bank a total of $20 million in bonus money, the biggest single windfall in the game.

It’s unlikely that Tiger is going to win the whole FedExCup Playoffs again. He needs help from Justin Rose, the No. 1 player in the world who has been more consistent through the regular season and postseason. So Rose will probably get that $10 million bonus payout for winning the cup, but Tiger isn’t going to get chump change for winning the instant tournament.

Here are your payout totals for the Tour Championship, where the purse was bumped up $250k to an even $9 million this year.

  • 1. $1.62 million
  • 2. $972,000
  • 3. $621,000
  • 4. $432,000
  • 5. $360,000
  • 6. $324,000
  • 7. $306,000
  • 8. $288,000
  • 9. $270,000
  • 10. $255,600
  • 11. $243,000
  • 12. $230,400
  • 13. $219,600
  • 14. $208,800
  • 15. $198,000
  • 16. $190,800
  • 17. $183,600
  • 18. $180,000
  • 19. $176,400
  • 20. $172,800
  • 21. $169,200
  • 22. $165,600
  • 23. $162,000
  • 24. $158,400
  • 25. $154,800
  • 26. $151,200
  • 27. $149,400
  • 28. $147,600
  • 29. $145,800
  • 30. $144,000

The Playoffs are just one month-long money bath. All four postseason events boast that $9 million purse, which is the largest non-Major, non-Players, and non-WGC purse in the game. There are only a handful of tournaments with purses higher than $9 million. But that’s not all! There’s that aformentioned bonus money. The winner is not the only person collecting that sweet bonus cash. Oh no, players who didn’t even make it to the damn postseason received some form of bonus payout. Here’s the FedExCup bonus money payout structure:

That bonus pool, which has been at $35 million throughout the FedExCup is getting an enormous bump to $60 million for next year. These bonus payouts on the final day of the season are going to be absurd a year from now.

The money is secondary to the importance of Tiger getting his first win in more than five years. But it’s become such a touchstone of this entire FedExCup that it’s silly not to recognize it. If all sticks according to plan, Tiger should be adding more than $4.5 million to his career earnings on Sunday. If Rose falters on the back nine, that could jump over $11 million.

It’s the biggest money day in golf but a Tiger win after this comeback season is far more important for the game. It’s the best possible way to end a fantastic 2018 season and head into the Ryder Cup next week in Paris.
