[Women's Golf] Wertz, Noble Lead Mustangs to Second Place Finish
Marion, Iowa - Despite over a week of heavy rains, the Mount Mercy Women's Golf Team was able to host the Klocke Family Classic this past weekend at Hunters Ridge Golf Course. Holding a nine stroke advantage after day one, the Mount Mercy Blue Team was not able to hang on to the lead placing second on the weekend.
Two golfers finished in the top 10 for the Mustangs. Allyson Wertz (JR/Kalona, Iowa) ended day one in a tie for second with a 77 (+5) and finished the weekend in fifth with a two-day total of 159. Additionally, Casey Noble (FR/Morning Sun, Iowa) rounded out day one with a 78 (+6) in fourth place and ended the weekend in 6th with a 162.
Also scoring for the Mount Mercy Blue Team was Natalea Cook (FR/Center Point, Iowa) (174/T-14th), Kayla Stammer (JR/Vermillion, S.D.) (174/T-14th), and Cheyenne Broquard (JR/Bloomington, Ill.) (175/T-17th). Leading the Mount Mercy Gold Team was Breanna Maher (SO/Prairie City, Iowa) with a 175 landing her in a tie for 17th place. Rounding out Mount Mercy Gold was Valarie Davidson (JR/Cedar Rapids, Iowa) (176/19th), Abigail Richardson (SO/Byron, Ill.) (185/T-27th), Alexis Poundstone (FR/Swisher, Iowa) (187/T-31st), and Peyton Staab (SO/Shueyville, Iowa) (199/39th).
After a strong day-two performance, Iowa Western CC was crowned tournament champions with a 658 team score. Mount Mercy Blue followed with a 665, Cardinal Stritch University (680), Grand View University (694), Mount Mercy Gold (723), Graceland University (727), Waldorf University (741), Culver-Stockton College (747), North Central Missouri CC (790), and Coe College (843).
The Mustangs will travel to Galena, Ill. to compete in the Clarke Fall Invitational hosted at Eagle Ridge Golf Course on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 15-16.
