Bellemare, Stopera lead N.Y. Mid-Am qualifying field

After each shot a 1-over-par 73 Thursday, Taylor Bellemare and Greg Stopera left Eagle Crest Golf Club confident they had advanced through the New York State Mid-Amateur qualifier.
What the two golfers, both of whom were among the earliest finishers, didn't necessarily expect is that the score would hold up for medalists honors.
"I am surprised," said Stopera, 36, runner-up in last weekend's Shaker Ridge club championship. "I gave a few (strokes) away out there, and with the par 5s, I thought someone might shoot under par today."
The co-medalists led a 13-player contingent who will be eligible to play in the State Mid-Am, for golfers ages 25 and older, Sept. 28-30 at Wanakah Country Club near Buffalo.
