Stanford’s Isaiah Salinda advances to U.S. Amateur golf semifinals
PEBBLE BEACH — Stanford senior Isaiah Salinda, coming off a victory in the Pacific Amateur Championship last month, moved a step closer to another significant title Friday by advancing into the semifinals of the U.S. Amateur at Pebble Beach Golf Links.
Salinda, a South San Francisco native who was the No. 29 seed in the tournament, edged Vanderbilt’s Will Gordon of Davidson, N.C., 2 and 1. Salinda birdied the first hole to take a 1-up lead, grew his cushion 4 up and then held on against the fifth-seeded Gordon.
Salinda clinched the victory with an iron onto the green on No. 17 that set up a two-putt for par. Gordon also parred No. 17.
