The Players winner gets $1.98 million in prize money
The Players pays out major championship money.
Whoever wins The Players Championship on Sunday will get $1.98 million out of a total tournament purse of $11 million. Those are both record payouts for The Players. The previous high total purse was last year’s $10.5 million.
The Players is golf’s extremely unofficial fifth major. It gets that status primarily because it draws a deep and talented field and takes place at TPC Sawgrass, one of the world’s most recognizable courses with arguably its most recognizable hole, island-green 17th. But a small part of drawing that field is waving a big carrot in front of it, and golf tournaments have for years tried to build prestige for themselves by paying out ever-bigger sums.
At $11 million, The Players has the same-sized purse this year as the Masters and might also equal or surpass the Open and PGA Championship payouts. All of them will probably fall short of the U.S. Open, where the purse reached a record $12 million last year.
