[Women's Golf] Record Rounds Highlight Fall Season

The Montreat Cavaliers' women's golf team had a milestone fall campaign in 2017 that concluded at Egwani Farms Golf Club in Rockford, Tennessee at the Maryville College Invitational.

After opening the campaign with a record-breaking round, they did the same in closing it out. In the first round of the Invitational, the Cavaliers lowered the school record to 335 for a round, five strokes better than the record set earlier in the fall.

The next day, they eclipsed the short-lived mark by an impressive 12 strokes to bring the school record down to 318. They also broke Montreat's 36-hole record and finished fourth out of eight teams and defeated Tennessee Wesleyan, St. Andrews, Maryville, and Hendrix in the process.

Sara Gwillim (JR/Bethalto, IL) – 78/74 

Jamie Hubbard (FR/Hardeeville, SC) – 91/79

Sydney Fairchild (FR/Gadsden, AL) – 84/85

Savannah Kummelman (FR/Plant City, FL) – 86/80

Gwillim's 74 is her lowest career round ever in competition. The two combined rounds yielded a new 36-hole best for the sophomore and a new 36 hole best in Montreat Cavaliers' history.

"What a great tournament to bookend our fall schedule, posting a new school record in our first event and then to go even lower to close out the fall season. The great thing is, we have the potential to go even lower. We just need to be patient and not try to force anything," said head coach John Sullivan. "We're extremely proud of our ladies, not only for their play, hard work and determination, but more so for their integrity, character and incredible attitudes. We're building something special here at Montreat, and it's much bigger than just golf. We're very excited to spend the winter months putting in work and come out in the spring ready to contend."

Next up: The Cavaliers return outdoors on February 26 at the Mars Hill Intercollegiate.
