Ian Poulter pranks fan with amusing club-throwing ‘lesson’
Ian Poulter may lack a certain green jacket, but the European Ryder Cup star is a master when it comes to throwing golf clubs — a skill he sought to pass on to an unsuspecting fan in a session of “Bad Coaching” the Euro Tour recorded ahead of the Nedbank Golf Challenge and released on Friday.
What golfer would not relish the chance to receive a private lesson from Poulter, Padraig Harrington, Lee Westwood, or Martin Kaymer? That was the premise of the event prior to the penultimate event of the European Tour’s year-long 2017 Race to Dubai — though things did not go quite as planned for the fortunate few who believed they were about to glean priceless bits of knowledge from four of the game’s top professionals. The results of the worst golf lessons cooked up by the Euro quartet, though, were pretty funny.
We particularly enjoyed Kaymer’s “right-knee swing-through” and finger- and eye-stretching routine and, of course, the iron-chucking tips from epic stick-tosser Poulter, which elicited a concerned “Ooh, gosh” from his student.
As for the actual golf at Gary Player Country Club in Sun City, South Africa, Kaymer finished in fifth place at 6-under — five shots back of winner Brandan Grace. Westwood’s 5-under was good for a share of sixth, Poulter was tied for 19th at 1-under, and Harrington posted a T42 at 4-over.
