Justin Thomas running on fumes after playoff win at the CJ Cup

0

Justin Thomas moves to No. 3 in the world after ending a lengthy season with a playoff win over Marc Leishman at the new CJ Cup.

Justin Thomas may be only 24, able to crank huge drives, and employ some old-school finesse, but the 2017 FedEx Cup champ is out of gas and looking forward, finally, to a restful offseason after a long PGA Tour campaign.

“I’m so excited to not do anything,” Thomas told Golf Channel after defeating Marc Leishman on the second playoff hole of the inaugural CJ Cup for his sixth tour win of the calendar year and first of the 2017-2018 wrap-around season. “I officially have nothing left in the tank.”

For sure, the tour’s 2017 Player of the Year has earned some time off, what with capturing his first major title at the PGA Championship after scoring a sparkling 59 at the Sony Open in Hawaii and finishing the season by hitting the $10 million FedEx Cup jackpot by prevailing in overtime — also over Leishman — at the Dell Technologies Championship.

Before leaving for a well-deserved vacay (he’ll interrupt his holiday to tee it up at Tiger Woods’ Hero World Challenge in about six weeks), Thomas put on a show in South Korea worthy of the PoY.

There was this cart path-assisted, 461-yard drive on the 598-yard par-5 12th hole during Saturday’s third round at The Club at Nine Bridges. 461 yards! That’s likely the longest drive of the season and we’re just in Week 3 of an interminable march.

After a 137-yard second shot, Thomas drained a birdie putt and his 2-under 70 helped him into a two-way tie with Scott Brown for the 54-hole lead.

That’s the same hole on which JT sauntered after an 18-foot eagle putt that dropped in the opening round.

And how about Thomas hearkening back to the days of stymies when, in Friday’s second round, he stashed his putter in favor of a wedge to chip in for a birdie on the green of the par-4 5th? The issue: a sketchy section of the putting surface.

So now the newly installed world No. 3 gets to put his feet up and rests on his laurels for a while. We can’t imagine anyone will begrudge Thomas his layoff.
