[Golf] Golf Teams Compete at SCAD-Atlanta

COVINGTON, Ga.- The St. Andrews University men's and women's golf teams competed in the SCAD-Atlanta Fall Invitational on Monday and Tuesday at The Oaks GC in Covington, GA.

The St. Andrews women shot rounds of 356 on day one and 338 on day two to finish in 9th place with a 694 and behind such conference schools as first-year member Brenau University (Ga.), SCAD, TWU, Montreat (NC), Truett McConnell (Ga.) and Reinhardt Univ. (Ga.) who beat the knights by just 8 strokes. Brenau ended up winning the Invitational with a 594 while their golfer Sara Bowers won with a -1 at 142.

Junior Devon Omar (JR/Grovetown, GA) paced the Knights by shooting 80 and 77 to place 25th overall and just 15 shots over par (157) for the tournament. Senior Olivia Pruitt (SR/Duncan, OK) then placed 29th with rounds of 81 and 82 to finish 2nd on SAU with a 163.

The other Lady Knights competing were senior Isabelle Sullivan (SR/Fremont, NH) and freshman Hayley Reed (FR/Concord, NH). Reed finished 44th after rounds of 95 and 89 improving by six strokes on day two while Sullivan finished 48th improving on day two by 10 strokes with her 90.

The Lady Knights are next in action October 2-3 at the AAC Fall Championships hosted by Union College in Pineville, KY.

The men then finished in 7th place improving by 12 strokes from round one to finish ahead of conference foe Bryan College (TN) but behind Truett McConnell, Reinhardt, TWU, and SCAD. William Carey (Miss.) won the invite with a 570 after shooting an under par round on day two.

SAU shot quality rounds of 302 and 290. The field was very tough and each team played very good golf on day one with SCAD shooting even par 284 and every other team on day two shooting under 290. 1st and 8th place were separated by just 26 strokes. Loyola-New Orleans's golfer won the tournament by shooting a 70 and 65 to finish -7 under par.

Returning senior national qualifier Joe Hurn (SR/Mountaintop, PA) led the way for SAU with his 74 and 70 to finish in a tie for 13th place while juniors Caleb Hensley (JR/Monroe, NC) and Alberto Firpi (JR/Puerto Rico) were right behind him in a tie for 20th. Firpi improved greatly to day two by 8 strokes a she finished at 148 (78-70) while Hensley shot 75 and 73 as he also improved from round to round.

Senior John Lyle (SR/Goodview, VA) then came next for the Knights in 32nd with a 75 and 77 for a 152 while junior was 39th with a 78.

Senior Jordan Sharpe (SR/Wilson, NC) was then the fifth Knight to finish under 80 with a 79, his career-high in round one before he shot an 84 in round two to place 44th with a 163. Sophomore Blake Bartlett (SO/Pikeville, NC) then competed as an individual finishing with a 165 score as he improved by 13 strokes from day one with his second round 76.

The men's team is next in action on Oct. 9-10 for the AAC Fall Championships hosted by Point University in Columbus, GA.
