PGA Championship leaderboard: Sergio Garcia implodes early at Quail Hollow
Sergio Garcia can’t avoid the water early into his opening round at Quail Hollow.
Sergio Garcia was hot in the early going at Quail Hollow — and we don’t mean with his golf clubs.
The reigning Masters champ was not favored to win this week’s PGA Championship, but at 40-1, he certainly was not among those the oddsmakers believed would bomb out early from Quail Hollow. At 4-over at the turn, though, the newlywed has much work to do to avoid missing the cut at the final major of the men’s 2017 season.

Here’s how things went wrong for Sergio, who began his first round with a birdie on the par-5 10th hole and sandwiched a bogey between that and another bird on the par-3 13th. A couple of pars later and things went to hell in a hurry for the 37-year-old Spaniard who’s been known to get a tad warm under the collar.
On 16, a water-logged approach shot led to a double bogey-6. He followed that with a bogey and then another splashdown and double on the par-4 18th and he made the turn at 75.
His incoming nine did not start out well, either.
Jim Herman and Gary Woodland currently lead at 3-under through 12 and 11 holes, respectively. Jordan Spieth, looking for a career grand slam with a victory, is at 1-over through 10. Favorite Rory McIlroy will take the course at 1:35 p.m. ET.
