Get a Ruling • Re: Ground under repair
I don't believe ground level markings have any direct relevance to this situation unless the last point of crossing the outermost margin of the GUR happens to be a point on the ground level markings of the GUR (or if the ground level markings extend beyond the footprint of the tree - which is unlikely to be the situation in this OP). IMO, in this OP, the relevant estimated point on the edge of the canopy itself is the last point of crossing the outermost margins of the GUR and the ball lost (KVC) in the canopy should be dropped with 1CL of the point vertically below that last crossing point.don wrote:If I had to make a ruling on the day, I think I would rule that the ball is lost in the tree and would deem that it lies at the base of the tree. much like a ball lost in an underground pipe. So my ref point would be the edge of the GUR on a line from the tree base.Chippings wrote:A player's ball goes high into the branches of a tree rooted in gur.
The ball does not drop down and there is KVC that the ball is lodged in the tree somewhere .
The beginning of the branches of the tree ,through which the ball travelled, start 10 yards outside the white lined area of the gur at ground level.
Where does the player take relief .
While the definition of the margins of GUR do not cover this canopy situation, the decisions certainly contemplate this situation and make provision for it - see D25/10.5, for example. The ground level margin of the limit of the GUR is defined the way it is to ensure that there is no relief for a ball in a shrub/tree overhanging GUR where the shrub/tree is rooted outside the GUR.
All IMO, of course.
