The Open Championship moves to the second round on Friday at Royal Birkdale. It’ll be a long day on the links on the English coast, with some players jockeying for position atop the leaderboard and others scrambling not to miss the cut.

At The Open, the top 70 players in the field (plus ties) survive to play beyond the 36 holes. How many shots a player sits off the lead doesn’t matter, as long as he’s within 70 leaderboard places of the guy leading the pack. That makes for some interesting head-to-head competition in the middle of the pack, because the players on the fringe are the ones who set the cut. It’s different from tournaments where the cut is determined by a specific deficit. In some ways, it can make Fridays more fun.

Birkdale isn’t all that long, a par-70 course that’s playing this week at 7,156 yards. But high winds can and do visit the grounds, and the fairways are as narrow as they are flat. It’s not an easy place to play. When Padraig Harrington won The Open there nine years ago, he did it with a score of 3-over.

What players appreciate about Birkdale more than anything is its fairness.

“You get much more consistent bounces, so the well-struck shots are rewarded and typically end up about where you would anticipate,” Phil Mickelson says.
