The key factor is when the player starts the search. This interpretation covers all situation, so the ball may be approx in a bush 5 meters from the tee or 300m. The player can go back to in any moment once the search has started. It’s obvious that if the player hasn’t yet reached the tee when the search period expires he wouldn’t play a provisional but a ball under stroke and distance.
