AFCON drama at Man Utd: One star selected, another suffers a heartbreaking snub
Two Manchester United players have now discovered their fate ahead of the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
AFCON is set to kick off next month and run through to mid-January 2026.
Cameroon have officially released their 28-man squad.
United forward Bryan Mbeumo is one of their biggest stars and is part of the squad.
While it is a moment of pride for Mbeumo, his teammate Andre Onana has been dealt a heartbreaking blow.
Cameroon has selected four goalkeepers in their ranks but have brutally axed Onana.
Simon Omossola, Devis Epassy, Simon Ngapandouetnbu and Edouard Sombang will be the shot-stoppers travelling to the competition.
The decision has stunned many, especially considering the 29-year-old was included in both the October and November international camps.
Onana was forced out of Old Trafford in the summer after the signing of Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp.
The former Ajax star is currently spending the 2025-26 season on loan at Turkish outfit Trabzonspor.
Although his performances have stabilised in the less demanding league, they were not enough to convince Cameroon’s selectors.
It has been a punishing year for Onana, and he will now hope this setback becomes the turning point in a long-awaited revival.
Mbeumo has been nothing short of sensational for United since arriving from Brentford in the summer.
With the winger set to miss a chunk of games during AFCON, manager Ruben Amorim will be forced to find in-house solutions to maintain the team’s attacking spark.
Amad Diallo and Noussair Mazraoui are also expected to be selected for their respective national teams for AFCON.
