Teams Liverpool FC Draw With The Most – Everton Of Course

Those that grew up watching Liverpool under Rafael Benítez will know that draws can kill you. In some ways, a draw can feel like a good thing, given the fact that you managed not to lose. Yet draws can also be the things that end up derailing a title charge. In 2008-2009, for example, the Reds drew 11 times, whilst Manchester United drew just six. If Liverpool had drawn three, won five and lost three of those 11, we’d have won the title.

That isn’t how football works, of course, and some draws appear better than others. With that in mind, here’s a look at the teams that Liverpool have drawn against the most.

The Top Ten

Here is a look at the top ten teams that Liverpool have drawn against in all competitions since the 1893-1894 season, including how many games we’ve played against said opposition and therefore what our draw percentage against them is. Obviously, we are more likely to have drawn against teams that we’ve played against the most often, which is why that percentage figure matters.

The information is correct as of the end of August 2025, with information having been taken from transfermarkt.co.uk.

Team Number of Games Played Number of Draws Draw Percentage
Everton 233 75 32.18%
Arsenal 235 65 27.65%
Manchester United 206 59 28.64%
Manchester City 194 50 25.77%
Chelsea 197 46 23.35%
Tottenham Hotspur 185 44 23.78%
Newcastle United 185 44 23.78%
Blackburn Rovers 139 43 30.93%
West Bromwich Albion 140 42 30%
Aston Villa 201 41 20.39%

Taking a Closer Look

The table above tells us quite a lot about the teams that Liverpool have drawn with the most often, but it is still worth taking a closer look to see if we can learn anything more.

Everton – 75 Draws

When it comes to the team that Liverpool have drawn more games against than any other, it makes complete sense that Everton would top the list. According to transfermarkt, we have played the Blues more than any other team bar Arsenal, with neither side happy to lose and give up the bragging rights.

Merseyside derbies are always competitive fixtures, which can be seen in the data. Not only have we drawn the most actual games against our neighbours, we also have the highest win percentage against them too. Matches against the Blues are never fun, but we can generally be proud of our record.

Arsenal – 65 Draws

The team that we have played the most out of all of the ones on our list is Arsenal. The Gunners have often been competing for the same sorts of trophies as Liverpool have, whether that be FA Cups or league titles, so perhaps that isn’t too surprising.

The London side has also been much more successful than Everton, so it is not shocking that we’ve drawn fewer games with them than the Blues; after all, they haven’t had the same need to play dirty in order to try to drag us down to their level. Even so, it is surprising to see the number of times that we’ve drawn with them in our history.

Manchester United – 59 Draws

If you thought that Manchester United would be higher on the list, it is understandable. Liverpool and our friends from along the M62 are the two most successful clubs in English football, so it isn’t a shock that we’ve also drawn against them quite regularly, with neither team willing to give an inch.

Had a delivery driver come to our place yesterday. His name was Graham, from Liverpool, about late 50’s early 60’s, and supports the Red half. I told him about my love & allegiance to Manchester United since 1984. We had laughs and banter. That’s what football should be about.

There is also the fact that the dominance of the two clubs has happened at different times. For Liverpool, the 1970s and 1980s were their heyday, whilst the Red Devils will look to the 1990s and 2000s as their most dominant period, allowing for plenty of draws to come in between defeats and wins.

Manchester City – 50 Draws

To some extent, it is somewhat surprising that Manchester City are in the top ten of the teams that Liverpool have drawn against the most. Prior to the sportswashing era, City were a team that struggled to sit in the top-flight for any length of time and certainly weren’t challenging for titles in the same way that the Reds have done historically.

The successful side that people have come to expect nowadays wasn’t really there prior to the takeover, so you might imagine that Liverpool would’ve been able to win against them rather than settling for a draw as often as they have.

Chelsea – 46 Draws

When Liverpool were the dominant side in England, Chelsea weren’t really any of our business. When Chelsea began winning on a regular basis after the takeover of the club by Roman Abramovich, the Reds weren’t good enough to take the game to them on a regular basis.

With that in mind, it makes sense that they would draw on a semi-regular basis, given that the ‘weaker’ of the two sides would’ve been doing anything possible to stop their opponent from running away with the games. That being said, this is the matchup with the second-lowest draw percentage in the top ten.

Tottenham Hotspur – 44 Draws

Having played one another 185 times at the time of writing, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur have shared 44 draws. That is, perhaps, suggestive of two teams that haven’t been operating on the same level as one another at various times during their histories, with Spurs rarely competing for the same kind of trophies as Liverpool have been.

Instead, the Londoners have been much more likely to invest their energy into the countless different city derbies that they’ve played in over the years, whereas the Reds have been going up against the best of the best in the top-fight.

Newcastle United – 44 Draws

There has always been excitement in the matches that Liverpool have played in against Newcastle United, with two 4-3 wins for the Reds in succession arguably being at the top of the pile on that front. The fact that the figures are exactly the same as they are against Spurs is fascinating in that context.

The takeover of the Magpies by the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia might have given Geordies an inflated sense of their importance in the sport, but historically they haven’t really been able to hold a candle to Liverpool and that has shown in how often they have looked for a draw.

Blackburn Rovers – 43 Draws

You are unlikely to think that Blackburn Rovers would be the team in the top ten against whom Liverpool have the second-highest draw percentage, yet that is very much the case. It is likely to be on account of the fact that the two teams have rarely been on the same level as each other, with Blackburn’s success mostly coming in the sport’s more formative years, whilst Liverpool are very much a modern success story.

Trying not to lose has often been the approach of one of the two sides, which is what ends up producing such a huge number of draws as we see here.

West Bromwich Albion – 42 Draws

It isn’t exactly outrageous to suggest that West Bromwich Albion have often been a team struggling to dominate games. The result of that is that the Baggies have been happy to make life difficult for the best teams out there, often heading into a game happy to settle for a draw rather than take a loss.

That might help to explain why it is that the Midlands side have enjoyed more draws against Liverpool as a percentage of games played than all but two teams in the top ten. Some of them have been well-known, such as when Jürgen Klopp took his players to ‘celebrate’ in front of the Kop after a 2-2 draw in 2015.

Aston Villa – 41 Draws

Of the ten teams that have made the top ten in draws against Liverpool, it is Aston Villa that come bottom of the pack in terms of a draw percentage. There is likely to be perfectly good reason for that, not least of all the fact that the two teams have tended to play attacking football throughout their history.

Even when Villa have been a ‘poor’ side, they have still believed that they deserve to be able to share the pitch with Liverpool, refusing to opt for the ‘men behind the ball’ approach that lesser teams tend to turn to on a regular basis. A team that does things the ‘right’ way.
