Sports Briefs: Mill Valley standout boosts Florida St. soccer to Final Four
Mill Valley’s Yuna McCormack scored a goal to help lift Florida State into the Final Four of the NCAA women’s soccer tournament on Friday.
McCormack scored in the 51st minute as the Seminoles (14-2-4) defeated Ohio State 4-1 in the quarterfinals. McCormack’s goal restored Florida State’s two-goal cushion at 3-1 less than 2 minutes after Ohio State scored to pull within 2-1.
Florida State awaits Friday’s winner between TCU and Vanderbilt in the national semifinals, which are set to take place on Dec. 5. The other semifinal will be contested between Stanford and Duke, which ended Washington’s run through the tournament with a 3-0 victory in the quarterfinals.
Washington had reeled off a string of victories to win the Big 12 Tournament and get into the NCAA quarterfinals since the death of goalie Mia Hamant — a former Redwood High standout who was battling Stage 4 kidney cancer — earlier this month.
