Insider Suggests This AL Team Is Red Sox’s Biggest Competition For Alex Bregman

Now that the Boston Red Sox have made their first significant move of the offseason in trading for Sonny Gray, fans are wondering what’s next. Based on intel from USA Today‘s MLB insider Bob Nightengale, offseason activity across the league will mostly happen in the trade market until January. This means we might not figure out Alex Bregman’s landing spot until the new year.

If that’s the case, December will be filled with speculation about Bregman. The Red Sox are known to be highly interested in re-signing Bregman, but he’ll have other eager suitors. On Friday, MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand was discussing Bregman’s market and only mentioned one other team besides the Red Sox: the Detroit Tigers.

“It wouldn’t surprise me if there was a reunion (between Bregman and the Red Sox), but at the same time, the Red Sox have also shown interest in adding a big power bat,” Feinsand said.

“Bregman has the ability to hit the ball out of the park, but he’s not Pete Alonso or Kyle Schwarber, so when (Craig) Breslow says that he’s going to be aggressive, I don’t know if that means returning Bregman, or signing one of those big boppers, or possibly doing both, which obviously would be the most aggressive play.”

“I think the Tigers are also in the mix for Bregman,” Feinsand said. “They wanted him last year, and I think they’re going to try for him again this year.”
