IHSA reschedules Class 5A/6A football state title games, hopes for 7A/8A decision on Saturday

The Illinois High School Association announced on Friday night that Saturday's postponed Class 6A and Class 5A football state championship games will be played on Tuesday.

Both games will be at Illinois State University's Hancock Stadium. The Class 5A game, Providence vs. St. Francis, will start at 3 p.m. with the Class 6A game, Fenwick vs. East St. Louis, following at 6 p.m.

All previously purchased tickets will be honored.

The IHSA says it is still in the process of rescheduling the Class 8A (Mount Carmel vs. Oswego) and Class 7A (Brother Rice vs. St. Rita) state championship games.

“There are still some logistical hurdles to clear in regard to the rescheduling of the Class 7A and 8A games,” IHSA Executive Director Craig Anderson said in a statement. “It is our intention to have that finalized by Saturday (Nov. 29) evening. We appreciate the patience and support of the competing schools and our partners at ISU and in Bloomington-Normal as we navigate this unprecedented situation.”

The IHSA was forced to postpone the games when Illinois State closed its campus on Saturday due to an anticipated snowstorm.

“The postponement of the IHSA Football State Finals is unprecedented in the state playoffs 51-year history,” IHSA Executive Director Craig Anderson said in a statement. “All of the competing teams in Class 5A, 6A, 7A and 8A have been alerted that their state championship games will not be played on November 29, but that they will be played in the coming days. We appreciate the patience and understanding of these schools and communities as we work to determine the best and safest solution to rescheduling these contests and crowning state champions in our four largest classes.”
