Red Sox’s Alex Bregman Pursuit Draws Witty Scott Boras Pun
The Boston Red Sox have a lot of work to do this offseason after finding their way to the postseason in 2025. Perhaps their most important decision involves the future of All-Star third baseman Alex Bregman, who opted out of his contract to test the waters of free agency for the second straight offseason.
Bregman signed a three-year, $120 million contract with Boston last year, and he ended up hitting .273 with 18 home runs and 62 RBIs in 114 games. With the potential to earn more money on the table, Bregman decided to opt out and seek a bigger deal in free agency.
Just because he’s on the open market, though, doesn’t necessarily guarantee that Bregman will leave, as both sides appear to be open to a reunion. When discussing the situation, Bregman’s agent, Scott Boras, cracked a witty joke regarding Boston’s pursuit of his star client.
“No one wants a Breg-xit,” Boras joked when discussing Bregman’s potential return to the Red Sox.
The Red Sox’s pursuit of Bregman is a bit complicated. While he’s obviously a great fit in the locker room and the lineup, it’s fair to wonder if his price will get driven up too high for the team’s front office. If that ends up happening, Craig Breslow and company could pivot and target other options.
The door appears to be open for the time being when it comes to Bregman returning to the Sox, but it remains unknown what will end up happening. As a result, Bregman’s free agency will be worth keeping close tabs on over the coming weeks and months.
