Jets Announce Injury Decision Before Primetime Game With Patriots
The New York Jets confirmed an anticipated move before Thursday night’s game against the New England Patriots.
New York placed Garrett Wilson on the injured reserve approximately four hours before the Week 11 matchup’s 8:15 p.m. ET kickoff. The Jets had already ruled out the wide receiver for the AFC East showdown with a right knee injury.
Wilson had missed two games with the same injury before returning in last Sunday’s game against the Cleveland Browns. He didn’t record a catch in 19 snaps before leaving during the third quarter.
Despite missing time, Wilson leads the Jets with 36 receptions and 395 receiving yards this season. The 2022 first-round pick is highly likely to fall short of a 1,000-yard season for the first time in his career.
ESPN’s Rich Cimini reported earlier this week that Wilson was expected to miss three to four weeks. Jets head coach Aaron Glenn didn’t offer an update on the 25-year-old’s status, instead flippantly telling reporters to ask Cimini.
By moving him to the IR, Wilson must sit out at least four games. He’s eligible to return for a Week 15 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Given the team’s current state, it may make sense for the Jets to shut him down.
The Jets started the season with seven straight losses before defeating the Cincinnati Bengals and Cleveland Browns. They traded All-Pro defenders Sauce Gardner and Quinnen Williams earlier this month.
New York’s bottom-ranked passing offense could face a tough evening against New England without Wilson. Justin Fields completed six passes last Sunday, and it won’t be easy for Gang Green to lean on the ground game against the league’s top-rated rushing defense.
