Red Sox Don’t See This As ‘Major’ Offseason Need

The Boston Red Sox don’t plan on making any major additions to the bullpen this offseason.

Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow said as much during his conversation with reporters at Major League Baseball’s GM Meetings on Tuesday, with a “Justin Wilson-type addition” being their most likely move, according to The Boston Globe’s Peter Abraham.

It’s relatively unsurprising considering what some of their reel needs are…

Breslow has been open about wanting to add frontline starting pitching and a middle-of-the-order bat, even going as far as outlining the path in which he intends on filling those needs during his week in Las Vegas.

Aroldis Chapman, Garrett Whitlock, Justin Slaten and Greg Weissert — the unit primarily responsible for improving the club’s bullpen ERA from 4.39 in 2024 to 3.41 in 2025 — will all be back in the fold and are expected to carry that momentum into the new year, with help from an experienced veteran, of course.

Steven Matz, Kyle Finnegan, Hunter Harvey and Danny Coulombe are among the litany of pitchers who fit that mold, it’s just a matter of which ends up sticking.
