Tanner Houck Rumors: What Caused Red Sox Starter’s Setback

The Boston Red Sox won’t be getting Tanner Houck back as soon as they might have hoped.

The right-handed pitcher suffered a setback and was pulled off of his rehab assignment, as confirmed by Red Sox manager Alex Cora on Saturday. The Red Sox will keep Houck on the injured list for the time being while the training staff works with him in Boston.

“That’s what we’ve got right now,” Cora told reporters, per Red Sox broadcaster Mike Monaco. “We’ll have more information in the upcoming days.”

MLB.com’s Ian Browne reported Houck’s setback stems from a “recurrence of the right pronator strain.” Houck initially landed on the 15-day injured list May 14 due to the right pronator strain.

The 29-year-old recently made five rehab appearances (four starts) for Double-A Portland and Triple-A Worcester. He went a combine 1-3 with a 5.74 ERA in 15 2/3 innings pitched.

A clearly compromised Houck recorded a 8.04 ERA in nine starts for the Red Sox before being sent to the injured list in mid-May.
