Celtics’ Jordan Walsh Gets Brutally Honest On Potentially Earning Bigger Role
The Boston Celtics will wrap up their Summer League campaign on Sunday night against the Atlanta Hawks, and through four games, their standout performer has been third-year guard Jordan Walsh.
Considering how this is his third time playing in the Summer League, it shouldn’t be much of a surprise to see that Walsh has looked more comfortable in 2025. Through four games, Walsh is averaging 15 points per game, and it’s telling that the only contest Boston has lost so far was against the Miami Heat, when he got ejected late in the second quarter.
Through his first two seasons with the Celtics, Walsh hasn’t made much of an impact, but that could change moving forward. He’s showcased his potential throughout the Summer League action to this point, and he will look to wrap things up with another strong game against the Hawks.
Playing well during the Summer League is one thing, but playing well in games that actually matter is another thing. With that in mind, Walsh doesn’t think his standout performances throughout the month of July will earn him a bigger role with the C’s, saying it will take continued strong play if he wants more minutes.
“I’m thinking there’s gonna be an opportunity,” Walsh said when asked about potentially earning more minutes next season. “With so many people gone and (Jayson Tatum) hurt, I think there’s an opportunity there.”
“I don’t think I’m gonna earn that opportunity in Summer League … I think it will more come during training camp and preseason … I think there is opportunity there.”
While Walsh played in 52 games last season, he only earned 7.8 minutes per game, which was actually less than the 9.2 minutes per game he earned as a rookie (albeit in only nine games of action).
However, the path to more minutes is there for Walsh if he can properly develop his game. Showing out during Summer League action is the first step, but Walsh is right in saying it’s not all he needs to do to earn more minutes, meaning his development will be worth watching throughout the entire offseason.
