Red Sox Veteran Loves Boston, Open To Contract Talks

Rob Refsnyder has been a key piece for the Boston Red Sox in 2025. While his role isn’t one of an everyday player, his contributions don’t go unnoticed.

Against left-handed pitching, he’s hitting .292 with four home runs and 14 runs batted in. He’s also walking in 13.8% of at-bats against righties, contributing to his 151 wRC+.

Refsnyder is in the final year of his contract, but he’d love to stay in Boston longer. He told MassLive’s Chris Cotillo that he’s open to a contract extension.

“I’m always open to (talks), but it is selfish thinking about yourself when you’re right in the middle of chasing a wild card,” Refsnyder said. “I won’t hide the fact that I love Boston. I’ve been very appreciative of how the fans have treated me and my family.”

Refsnyder had previously considered retirement, though the openness to sign an extension indicates a rejuvenated attitude. That could be in part due to the youth in the clubhouse.

“It is nice being around guys like Roman [Anthony] and Marcelo [Mayer],” Refsnyder said. “I’m sure they hate hearing about how old they are, but their energy is pretty contagious.”

The righty will likely see plenty of playing time early after the All-Star break. The Red Sox are slated to face three left-handed pitchers in their first five games when play resumes on Friday.
