"Last few hours": European club are now studying move to sign £72m Man Utd star - Di Marzio
Manchester United are likely to make multiple signings ahead of the new campaign.
Matheus Cunha is the club’s only high-profile signing of the summer, but this is expected to change soon.
United have made a third bid worth £70 million for Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo, which should be accepted.
A striker could be the next target but it could depend on Rasmus Hojlund or Joshua Zirkzee leaving the club.
Zirkzee has been linked with Atalanta over the last 24 hours, and Gianluca Di Marzio claims that AC Milan have requested information regarding Hojlund in the ‘last few hours’.
The Rossoneri are studying the feasibility of a summer deal for the Dane. They have just one senior striker in Santiago Gimenez after the exits of Tammy Abraham and Luka Jovic.
Man Utd should hold out for a permanent Hojlund deal
The 22-year-old has had a mixed career with the Red Devils. He netted 10 league goals in his debut campaign, but managed only four during the 2024/25 season.
Hojlund had limited service in the second half of the previous campaign, but was also guilty of squandering big chances. Hence, United are open to a summer sale.
The Red Devils spent a hefty £72 million to sign the Dane two years ago. They may want at least £45-50m to sanction his sale, given he is only 22 and has untapped potential.
A return to Italian football may suit him too. The Serie A is more tactical and less intense than the Premier League, which could help the Dane in finding goalscoring form.
We are unsure whether AC Milan can afford him. They reportedly can’t afford to pay more than £26m to sign Crystal Palace’s Jean-Philippe Mateta, according to L’Equipe.
Milan are probably eyeing a loan deal with an option to buy which would not suit United. The club need to recoup immediate funds for the purchase of a marquee striker.
Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins is reportedly one of the top names on their wishlist.
