Luka Vuskovic confidently claims he can become Tottenham’s Mats Hummels
Luka Vuskovic has made a confident claim about his chances of breaking into the Tottenham first team and has discussed one perceived weakness he has in his game.
Vuskovic’s loan spell at Westerlo has undoubtedly been a successful one, with the Croat establishing himself as a mainstay in the Belgian club’s backline, which is a huge achievement for someone who is just 17 years of age.
As expected from someone so young, the defender’s game is still a little rough around the edges and he has been part of a defensive unit which has conceded 48 goals in just 27 league games so far.
Tottenham youngster Luka Vuskovic is hitting the headlines, not for his defensive exploits but for his impact at the other end of the pitch, having already found the back of the net seven times this season.
Luka Vuskovic makes a claim about his Tottenham chances
On the surface, Vuskovic does not appear like a typical Ange Postscoglou centre-back, with his 6-foot-4-inch frame meaning that he is not the quickest across the ground or the most nimble.
However, the teenager says he takes inspiration from German football legend Matt Hummels on how a lack of pace does not necessarily stop one from becoming a top centre-back.
When asked about his future and his chances of breaking through at Tottenham, Luka Vuskovic told Gazet van Antwerpen (as relayed by Voetbalkrant): “I had barely played ten games for Hajduk. In the meantime, I have already gained some experience,” he is quoted as saying to Gazet van Antwerpen.
“Without being arrogant, I can say that I have shown sufficient qualities. Maybe I still have to work on my speed a bit more, although Mats Hummels shows that you can make a difference even without that speed.
“If I have made my debut at Tottenham, it will be fine. Is there a chance that I will stay at Westerlo? That has not been discussed yet.”
Vuskovic is yet to develop into a finished product
Vuskovic is still extremely young and is learning the ropes at the highest level, with the youngster yet to reach his physical peak.
It would thus be a little unfair to nitpick on the weaknesses in his game at this stage as he still has a few years to gain some experience and work on his shortcomings.
While raw pace is not something you expect players to gain, the 17-year-old can improve other aspects of his game that help cover for his lack of pace.
