Brennan Johnson reveals why Postecoglou screamed at him on Thursday
Brennan Johnson found himself in the spotlight during Tottenham’s 2-2 Europa League draw against AS Roma—not just for his goal, but for a heated exchange with manager Ange Postecoglou.
Brennan Johnson evolution under Postecoglou
When Tottenham Hotspur signed Brennan Johnson from Nottingham Forest in the summer of 2023, expectations were high, though his first season was anything but smooth.
The Welsh international struggled to find his feet, netting only five times in 38 appearances across all competitions.
Despite showing flashes of brilliance, Johnson often seemed out of sync with the team’s dynamic attacking approach.
Fast forward to the current season, and it is clear Johnson has turned a corner. The forward has already scored nine goals in just 19 matches, marking a significant improvement.
His newfound ability to position himself effectively inside the box has been a game-changer, and much of this progress can be attributed to Postecoglou’s guidance on the training ground.
This week, the clash against Roma was yet another example of Tottenham’s evolving attacking philosophy under Postecoglou. Coming off a resounding 4-0 victory over Manchester City, Spurs approached the Roma game with confidence.
Playing at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, they were expected to dominate. However, defensive lapses meant that Spurs had to settle for a draw, and it was Johnson’s first-half performance that drew a sharp response from his manager.
Postecoglou gave a fiery half-time message
Brennan Johnson’s goal against Roma was a highlight, but his first-half display left Ange Postecoglou visibly frustrated.
The manager’s animated reaction on the sidelines caught the attention of fans, and after the game, Johnson shed light on their half-time interaction. Speaking to TNT Sports, the Wales international reflected on Postecoglou’s feedback.
He said: “I think in the game it’s easy to get into your own head a little bit. At half-time, he told me a little bit of information that was definitely helpful and nothing more than that really.”
When asked what Postecoglou told him at the break, Johnson replied: “He just said keep being more positive. That’s all he needs from all of our players, trying to be positive, on the front foot and play forward.
“I think in the first half, I was definitely probably guilty of playing back too much. So, yeah, it’s something that I definitely took onboard.”
A pivotal moment for Brennan Johnson at Spurs
I believe that ultimately, Postecoglou’s half-time intervention against Roma might seem like a minor moment, but it encapsulates the relationship between a manager and a player striving for excellence.
Johnson’s response, both on the pitch and in his post-match comments, demonstrates a willingness to learn and improve—a trait that will serve him and Tottenham well in the months ahead.
