Red Sox Lose Lefty Reliever In Waiver Claim By AL Foe

The Boston Red Sox have one less left-handed reliever on their roster.

The organization announced Friday night that Bailey Horn was claimed off waivers by the Detroit Tigers. Boston also didn’t tender contracts to Isaiah Campbell or Bryan Mata, making them free agents.

The news about Campbell and Mata basically was already known when Boston designated them for assignment to add pitcher Hunter Dobbins and outfielder Jhostynxon Garcia to the 40-man roster earlier this week

Horn spent just one season with the Red Sox after they traded for the pitcher from the Chicago White Sox for cash considerations in late April. The 26-year-old made just 18 appearances — he spent a good chunk of time with Triple-A Worcester — and posted a 1-1 record with a 6.50 ERA and 1.778 WHIP. Horn didn’t allow a run in only 10 of his outing.

The Red Sox should be able to easily replace Horn, but left-handed pitching isn’t an organizational strength. Boston has just five lefties on its 40-man roster, including Brennan Bernardino, Cam Booser, Chris Murphy, Zach Penrod and Justin Wilson, who reportedly signed with the Red Sox last week.
