Alasdair Gold confirms one player has been added to Spurs leadership group

Alasdair Gold reveals that Ange Postecoglou has added an extra player to Tottenham’s leadership group, joining Heung-min Son, Cristian Romero, and James Maddison.

One of the first things that Postecoglou did when he walked through the door of Hotspur Way last summer was to update the club’s leadership group in an effort to change the culture in the dressing room.

Hugo Lloris was relegated to a bit-part role, as was Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, and with Harry Kane departing, the Australian decided to make Son Heung-min the new captain, while naming Cristian Romero and James Maddison as his deputies.

Guglielmo Vicario joins the leadership group

It is revealed that those three players have now been joined in the leadership group by Vicario, with Postecoglou said to appreciate the goalkeeper for the way he carries himself and for the voice he has in the dressing room.

Some question marks have been raised about the Italian’s decision-making of late but there is no doubt that he remains quite vocal on the pitch and demands a lot from his teammates.

Gold said on his YouTube channel: “I understand that over the summer, Vicario was added to the team’s leadership group. You might remember Spurs always had this leadership group in the past which all of the players since have left.

“It was Kane, Hojbjerg, Lloris of course, someone else I’m completely forgetting, even Skippy was in it as a young captain in the making, learning from the others. I don’t think Ben Davies was in it, pretty sure he wasn’t. Eric Dier was one of them.

“So obviously, all of those players have moved on now, and you’ve got Son, Maddison and Romero. And from what I understand, officially Vicario was added to that in the summer to make up a fourth member because he is seen as a leader and he speaks very clearly and the players listen to him when he talks.

“He is a big voice in that dressing room, and he’s someone who’s been through a struggle, a battle in his career, and I think Postecoglou loves those kinds of players.”

Putting the topic of Vicario’s set-piece weaknesses aside, there is no doubt that the goalkeeper is a natural leader and is the sort of character we need in the dressing room in order to cultivate a winning mentality.
