Youngsters given the nod for Europa League

The clash with Qarabag at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is one many expect Spurs to get through without too much difficulty, and as such, there has been a call for some of the club’s younger players to get some minutes in the game and indeed the tournament as a whole.

UEFA rules dictated the kind of squad Ange Postecoglou could select for the competition in terms of senior players, with Djed Spence the main exclusion due to restrictions on homegrown and club-trained players.

But, all clubs are allowed to register a B-list of players, which is essentially a group of Under-21 players they wish to use in the competition, too.

As per the UEFA website‘s listing of Tottenham’s squad, we can now confirm four of the club’s academy stars are involved in that B-list.

According to the updated squad list, Luca Gunter is included among the goalkeepers, Tyrese Hall has been added, and far less surprising, both Mikey Moore and Will Lankshear are involved, too.

The subs bench beckons

Considering another UEFA rule, that club must name a squad of 23 players for each Europa League game, it had been expected that a number of youngsters would be included on the bench.

Spurs will be without Richarlison and Wilson Odobert, who are both injured, and Cristian Romero who has a one-match suspension to serve in European competition.

Lankshear and Moore had been expected to be involved in some capacity anyway throughout the competition, but the inclusion of both Gunter and Hall is seen as an exciting reward for their impressive form at youth level.

You can win with kids

Obviously, Tottenham need to take the Europa League seriously and our big first-team players will be essential to our hopes of going all the way in the competition. But, we’ve got plenty of fantastic young players who deserve a chance to shine, and these early league phase games are a great chance to give them that opportunity.

I would imagine Gunter won’t actually see any action this year, but Hall might just get a chance, and Lankshear and Moore will definitely get some substantial minutes under their belt.
