Ange Postecoglou issues statement after becoming Tottenham’s new manager

0 5

Ange Postecoglou has issued a statement following his departure from Celtic in order to take over the vacant managerial position at Tottenham Hotspur.

The 57-year-old left his role as Celtic boss earlier today to take over in north London on a four-year contract which saw Tottenham Hotspur finally get their Antonio Conte replacement, and it only took over 70 days, two interim managers, and an Arne Slot disaster to get there.

Postecoglou’s statement appeared on the official Celtic website in which he thanked the club’s board for their backing of him during his time at Parkhead and also had a special message for the club’s supporters.

He said: “I would like to sincerely thank everyone at the Club for everything they have given me. In particular, Dermot, Peter and Michael and the Celtic Board have shown me tremendous support in every aspect of my time at Celtic and I will forever be grateful for this.

“They brought me to the Club and I have worked so closely and so well with them for the past two years, I will always have a special relationship with them.

“They wanted me to extend my time at Celtic and while I am so respectful and understanding of their position, a new opportunity has been presented to me and it is one which I wanted to explore.

“It was an honour to be asked to be Celtic manager and during my two years I have given everything I have to deliver success to our supporters. Culminating in the Treble at the weekend, my players and backroom team have been brilliant for me on this journey.

“They have given us all some fantastic moments through their energy and effort, creating real quality, winning football.

“Our supporters have been magnificent to me and I thank them for the way they have embraced me during the past two years. My ambition was always to give our fans a team they could be proud of, a team people talked about and I think we have achieved that.

“Celtic is a phenomenal football club, and so much more – and I will forever be a supporter of this great institution. I wish everyone connected with Celtic nothing but continued success.”

Ange Postecoglou will now be trusted with arguably Tottenham’s most important rebuild since the early Mauricio Pochettino days, and the Australian will certainly be hoping to mimic that success – albeit with a trophy at the end of it.

Trophies have come rather plentifully to Postecoglou of late, having won five of the available six during his two seasons in Scotland, including a treble with Celtic this year.

Tottenham, on the other hand, have been without silverware since their 2008 Carling Cup win over Chelsea, making it 15 long years for the Spurs faithful.

However, with Postecoglou arriving with no experience in any of Europe’s top five leagues, some will question whether the Tottenham job is too big for him to take on. Only time will tell.

Spurs Web Opinion:

Postecoglou did an impressive job at Celtic and now the focus will be firmly on him bringing his attacking style of play to north London, which has been missing since Mauricio Pochettino’s exit.

He must be given time to turn the club around, this project will take time and the Spurs board must back him with every decision he makes.
