Report: Spurs could look to beat West Ham to German defender this summer
According to reports out of Germany, Tottenham Hotspur could be set to pip West Ham in the race to sign Bayer Leverkusen defender Jonathan Tah this summer.
Tah has been with Leverkusen since 2015 and has now amassed 305 appearances for the German club over the years (Transfermarkt).
It became clear in February that the 27-year-old was looking to bring his time in the Bundesliga to an end, with ambitions of playing in the Premier League putting clubs in England on high alert (90 Min).
That report claimed Spurs were among the clubs interested in the impressive centre-back. Liverpool and Newcastle were also thought to be keen at the time.
A report from German outlet BILD back in April posited West Ham as a potential destination for Tah, and suggested a move to the Hammers was a ‘very concrete prospect’.
The latest from BILD however, claims West Ham may end up disappointed this summer, as Tottenham Hotspur have once again emerged as contenders for Tah’s signature.
BILD discuss the big rebuild needed at Tottenham this summer, particularly in the defensive areas, and put Tah forward as the perfect candidate to join the Lilywhites.
Apparently, there is a release clause in Tah’s current contract which would allow him to leave Leverkusen for €18 million this summer. The only catch is, the clause must be activated and the fee paid up by the start of July.
It is believed Tah is now actively “pushing for a change” in his career, and it is said the player fits the profile of what Spurs are looking for.

A big, strong, reliable defender who is comfortable in possession sounds like the perfect remedy for a fragile Tottenham defence, and at that price, we should be snapping him up immediately. There will be competition for his signature, so we will have to make this happen as soon as possible.
