Report names multi-million pound figure Spurs have to pay Celtic for Ange Postecoglou

Tottenham Hotspur are set to pay Celtic £5million in compensation in order to seal the deal to bring Ange Postecoglou to the club, according to The Sun.

Spurs had wanted to be respectful of an important fixture for Celtic last weekend in which they sealed their eighth domestic treble with a Scottish Cup final win against Inverness Caledonian Thistle.

The BBC had earlier reported that Postecoglou has agreed to become Antonio Conte’s replacement in north London having agreed on an initial two-year deal with the Premier League outfit.

Postecoglou is currently on 12-month rolling contract at Parkhead and Celtic will receive a multi-million payout in order for the Australian to become Tottenham’s new head coach.

Spurs have been looking for a new manager since Antonio Conte’s exit in late March, with his assistant Cristian Stellini and then Ryan Mason taking interim charge for the remainder of a disappointing campaign which saw them finish eighth in the table.

Luis Enrique, Roberto De Zerbi and Marco Silva had been the other candidates on Tottenham’s shortlist (Sky Sports).

Postecoglou joined Celtic from Japan’s Yokohama F. Marinos in 2021 and won the league and League Cup in both of his two seasons as well as this season’s Scottish Cup.

£5million seems like a realistic figure for Postecoglou considering that Feyenoord were reported to be demanding around £12million for Arne Slot’s services (Evening Standard).

Postecoglou has a massive job on his hands at Tottenham which has to start with a complete revamp of the squad with many players including Hugo Lloris, Ivan Perisic, Harry Winks, Giovani Lo Celso, Davinson Sanchez and Ryan Sessegnon having been tipped to leave.

Spurs are already having to play catch-up in the transfer market compared to other clubs due to the length of their managerial search and now they must look to appoint a new sporting director as soon as possible.
