Kingstonian 0-5 Bishop’s Stortford Match Report 28/1/23

Bishop’s Stortford made it back-to-back away wins with a 0-5 victory at Kingstonian on Saturday. After two postponed home matches, the Blues continued the title challenge, on a day when Hornchurch lost and Cray Wanderers drew. Four points separate the top seven teams in the Pitching In Isthmian League Premier Division, Stortford sit fourth with games in hand on all of the teams above.

The Blues made a fast start, with Matt Johnson opening the scoring in the fourth minute. Darren Foxley’s corner from the right was side-footed home by the midfielder – deputising in defence – into the bottom corner from the six-yard line. Jack Giddens made a smart low save to deny Lee Lewis’ long range strike. At the other end Rob Tolfrey made a superb diving save to deny Foxley’s powerful hit that was heading for the top left corner. Anthony Church doubled the lead in the 20th minute, from Tosin Olufemi’s cut back from the right, Church slammed home into the left side of the goal. Tolfrey denied Foxley once more, going outside the left back, he aimed for the top corner at the near post but the keeper pushed his shot behind again, Great Evans thought he had reduced the arrears as he broke into the box and slotted into the net, but the referee blew his whistle for a foul in the build up. Donell Thomas dribbled away from a defender and into space in the box, but couldn’t hit the target from a tight angle. Foxley’s free kick looked to be curling in but Tolfrey was in position to deny the winger again, and the defence cleared the loose ball.

HT 0-2

Into the second half and Ryan Henshaw increased the lead further, Matt Johnson’s cross from the left went through the box to the captain at the far post, who headed home. The referee’s assistant belatedly raised his flag for offside, but the goal was confirmed after a discussion with the referee. Foxley was denied again in front of goal, but not by Tolfrey on this occasion, by the raised arm of a defender for a certain penalty. Olufemi stepped up, sent Tolfrey the wrong way and fired into the bottom left corner. Henshaw’s superbly weighted pass out to the right wing was perfect for Ollie Peters to run on to, but he was fouled by Dwight Pascal as he moved into the box for another spot kick. Olufemi went for the same corner and got the same result, although Tolfrey got a hand to it, the power was such that he couldn’t stop the ball from hitting the net. Iker Noguera Leon looked like he had netted a consolation for the Ks but his right-footed curling effort went wide of the target.
