Former Spurs boss reveals Daniel Levy wanted to sell him for £15m

0 4

Andre Villas-Boas has revealed that Daniel Levy was ready to let Paris Saint-Germain take him for £15m at the end of his first season at Tottenham.

Villas-Boas took over at Spurs from Harry Redknapp in the summer of 2012 following his ill-fated spell in charge of Chelsea.

Although Spurs just missed out on a top-four finish in the 2012-13 season, they had accumulated what was then a club-record points tally of 72 in the Premier League.

However, the north Londoners saw Gareth Bale depart to Real Madrid at the end of the season and the squad went through a significant overhaul that summer.

The team did not get off to the best of starts to the 2013-14 season and Villas-Boas was sacked halfway into the campaign, with Tim Sherwood being handed the reins until the summer.

Since leaving Spurs, the 44-year-old has gone on to have success in Russia, China and France.

The Portuguese coach, who has been out of football since departing Marseille back in February, has now opened up on how things unraveled for him at Tottenham.

He revealed that despite his love for the North London club, Levy was happy to sell him to PSG in the summer of 2013.

Villas-Boas told The Telegraph: “The PSG offer was on the table. Yeah, Daniel wanted to sell me for £15 million. PSG obviously didn’t want to pay £15 million and there were a lot of things that weren’t right with Paris Saint-Germain, particularly on their approach.

“And I decided to stay, for my love of Tottenham. I think Tottenham were waiting for me to go and that’s it. That was the stepping stone for the beginning of a bad relationship for that [second] season.

“It’s always details. At that time we were not happy with each other. I stayed in Tottenham for my love of Tottenham and Tottenham wanted me out and that’s it. That was the end of a story and we parted company by a very, very simple agreement.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I really liked Villas-Boas as a character and wanted him to succeed at Spurs but the style of football under the Portuguese coach was extremely dull and uninspiring.

Bale essentially carried us in the Portuguese coach’s first season at the club and perhaps Levy realised that AVB was not the man to take the club forward.
