Video: Steven Bergwijn scores a hat-trick in home debut for Ajax after leaving Spurs

0 4

Steven Bergwijn netted a hat-trick in his home debut for Ajax, who thrashed Groningen 6-1 at the Johan Cruijff Arena on Sunday.

Bergwijn found game time hard to come by at Tottenham last season and publicly voiced his intention to leave the North London club in search of regular game time (Algemeen Dagblad).

The 24-year-old got his wish last month when Ajax paid €31.25m (£26.4m) to take the winger back to the Eredivisie.

The Netherlands international has started the season in fine form, netting in his debut for the club in the Johan Cruijff Shield (the Dutch Super Cup) two weeks ago.

Bergwijn has now quickly endeared himself to the Ajax faithful, netting a hat-trick in his home league debut as Ajax, who put Groningen to the sword on Sunday.

The former Spurs man opened the scoring for the home side with just four minutes gone on the clock before heading home from close range just before half-time and producing a fine curling effort just after the interval.

Spurs Web Opinion

Bergwijn’s quality was never in doubt, which is why I felt that the winger could have potentially joined a club in a top league this summer instead of returning to the Eredivisie.

However, with the World Cup coming up in November, I could understand why the 24-year-old’s priority was to return to the Netherlands and play regularly.
