Ben Davies opens up on Romero first impression and strong defensive unit at Spurs

0 3

Speaking to Tottenham Hotspur’s website, centre-back Ben Davies has heaped praise on his teammate Cristian Romero following an impressive debut campaign in the Premier League.

Romero made the switch from Serie A side Atalanta last summer on a loan deal with an option to sign the Argentine for £42.5m (Football London).

In a season hampered by injuries, the 24-year-old made 30 appearances for Spurs (TransferMarkt), becoming a key part of Antonio Conte’s much-improved back line towards the end of the campaign.

Romero formed a formidable partnership in Conte’s back-three with both Eric Dier and Ben Davies, and the latter was full of compliments for his new Argentine teammate.

Davies said: “He’s been very good – I remember the first game I played with him was in a back three at Pacos de Ferreira away, it wasn’t a great game for the team to be honest, but I think he’s been very good for us since he arrived.”

Many players take time to adapt to the demands of the Premier League, however, Romero’s physicality, aggression and poise in possession have seen him instantly become one of the classiest defenders in the league.

Davies continued: “He’s good on the ball, strong at tackling and I think as a unit with all of our defenders, we’ve been good and we really clicked going into the final parts of the season.

“I include everyone in that – Davinson Sanchez and Joe Rodon are great professionals, they work hard every single day and they came in and played some minutes too, as well as the likes of Cristian and Eric Dier. Japhet Tanganga also played his part before his injury.

“In the last couple of months, we went on a good run and didn’t concede too many goals. I think we had a couple of late goals that were very disappointing – Brighton, Leicester – and if not for them, our record might look even better. But I think we’ve all adapted throughout the season and done really well together.”

Spurs Web Opinion

It’s clear that Cuti is a Rolls-Royce. I still have no idea how Fabio Paratici managed to convince him to join Spurs when we had Nuno Espirito-Santo as our manager and our best player looked as though he was going to leave.

I cannot wait to see him have a fully fit season under Conte and establish himself as one of the top centre-backs in the league.
