Arsenal warned off target as pundit places incredible fee on head of Wolves maestro

0 4

Former Wolves star David Edwards rates Ruben Neves as arguably the best midfielder in the Premier League, and feels he should warrant a £100million transfer fee.

Wolves have impressed time and time again since their return to the Premier League in 2018. The Molineux outfit have only once finished outside the top 10, and have twice finished seventh.

Neves has played a crucial role in Wolves’ success since joining the club. The Portuguese impressed in the Championship, contributing to seven goals in their triumphant 2017/18 season.

Neves continued to show what a key player he is in the Premier League. He has been directly involved in 20 goals from midfield in 128 Premier League appearances, and scored in Wolves’ last game, a 2-1 over Brentford.

Former Wolves man Edwards feels that Neves is a bona fide star, and is right in the mix with the best midfielders in the league.

As such, a number of clubs have cast admiring glances their way. One of those seemingly lurking are Arsenal.

“I believe Neves is arguably the best midfielder in the Premier League at the moment. The bigger clubs should be knocking Wolves’ door down,” he said via Molineux News.

While he feels Neves warrants a move to a big club, Edwards also thinks the Portuguese should command a massive transfer fee.

“He would be a bargain at anything under £100million at the moment, he really would. He does everything you want from a holding midfielder.”

While there has been interest from the likes of Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea, Wolves will be keen to fend that off.

Of course, Bruno Lage will want all of his key players to remain with the side for the foreseeable future.

Lage desperate for Neves to remain with Wolves

While there has been interest from big sides for Neves, Lage is keen on retaining him. The manager clearly wants all of his key players to stay, and work towards Wolves’ goals.

“The main thing, and we can clarify this, we are here with a project of our ideas – chairman, sporting director and manager – the main point is to continue with the same players, to improve them and go to the next level,” he said.

Lage was in charge at Benfica when Joao Felix was sold. Felix’s career has stagnated at Atletico Madrid, and Lage is desperate for his players to not suffer the same fate.

“When you want to make the next step and you sell your best players, the next step never happens,” he said.

“But in modern football if a big transfer appears, like it did when I was at Benfica. Two years ago a team came and paid €120million for one player – you cannot say no. You can say no, but you don’t receive money to improve the team and you continue with the same players.”

Clearly, the Wolves boss has his players’ best interests at heart. He does not want to make a large fee at the expense of the likes of Neves’ career.
