‘Audience would’ve turned off’ – Jose Mourinho jokes Roma conceded twice against Empoli to keep viewers switched on

JOSE MOURINHO joked that his Roma side conceded two goals to keep the audience entertained during their victory over Empoli on Sunday.

The Serie A giants scored four goals in 13 minutes to race into a 4-0 lead at the break against their mid-table hosts.

Former Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham added two more to his tally for the season as Roma sowed the game up before half-time.

Empoli would then go on to halve the deficit in the second half with strikes in the 55th and 72nd minutes.

But Roma comfortably held on to leapfrog Fiorentina and move into sixth place in the table.

And after the match Mourinho made light of the goals his side had conceded.

He told DAZN: “Yes we could’ve controlled the game better, but this is still a big achievement. It’s not easy to win 4-2 here.

“Coming into this game we already knew that Lazio, Atalanta, and Fiorentina all dropped points, so it was important for us to win and we did it.”

He then went on to add: “As for the second half, we did it for the audience.

“They would’ve turned their TV’s off it we went up 5-0.”

Mourinho is currently under pressure as Roma boss but has alleviated some of it with back-to-back victories.

They are now just four points behind Atalanta – who occupy the final Champions League qualification spot.

Roma are also through to the knockout rounds of the Europa Conference League.

Meanwhile, Abraham has been thoroughly enjoying his time in Italy since leaving Chelsea in the summer.

Under Mourinho, the 24-year-old has scored 17 goals in 30 games for the Serie A side.

Only four players have netted more goals in Italy’s top flight so far this season, while he is also the leading scorer in the Europa Conference League.

Next up for Roma is a home game against Genoa on February 6, before they then travel to take on defending champions and current table toppers Inter Milan.
