Opinion: Five things we learned from Tottenham’s 3-2 victory over Leicester

Tottenham Hotspur came from behind twice against Leicester City last night to win 3-2, with Steven Bergwijn scoring two in as many minutes to clinch all three points.

Let’s take a look at the five things we learned:

Steven Bergwijn is not going anywhere – I would be extremely surprised if Steven Bergwijn left the club in January now. I think Conte likes the look of him as a striker option and/or a different profile of player in a front three. You simply cannot sell someone off the back of a brace like that – it wouldn’t be a good look for the club and would not go down well. Hopefully, it can be a spring board for Stevie now.

Midfield three – Before the match, some Spurs fans seemed a little worried about the midfield three of Winks, Hojbjerg and Skipp. They are arguably relatively similar players in their profile as they operate in deeper positions, win the ball back, and pass it off to the attackers. Yesterday, Skipp and Hojbjerg were asked to drive up the right and left respectively. What they lacked in final third product, they made up for in effort and pressing. This gives Conte a good option against Chelsea.

Harry Kane sharp – Probably Harry Kane’s best game of the season for Spurs. A goal and an assist – and should have walked away with the match ball. On another day, he would have put that game to bed in the first half. But beyond his shooting, his all-round game was flawless. We haven’t seen him like that since the peak form under Mourinho last season.

Royal flush – Unfortunately, there was one casualty of the match. Emerson Royal was hooked at half-time and replaced by Matt Doherty, who was actually instrumental in the win. I feel for Emerson because he was signed as a right-back and was actually looking very impressive until Spurs switched formation under Conte. He is not well suited to RWB but I hope Conre can find a role for him.

Only going to get better – We must remember that Eric Dier and Cristian Romero will be slotting back into that back four after the international break. I believe that will add more solidity, power in the air, and fight to a slightly frail Spurs back line. Definitely something to build on and some big players still to return.
