Paper Talk: Newcastle near £35m defender swoop, but Chelsea pinch top striker target

0 3

Newcastle are closing on the signing of Diego Carlos, but look likely to miss out to Chelsea over a striker target, Arsenal have their eyes on three midfielders, while Monday’s transfer gossip claims Everton are ready to ask a former manager to return.

DIEGO CARLOS DEAL NEARS FOR NEWCASTLE

Newcastle are growing increasingly confident of securing the signing of Sevilla defender Diego Carlos.

The towering Brazil defender is emerging as the Magpies’ No 1 defensive target this month after near-misses on other players. Indeed, Newcastle have seen three bids for Sven Botman turned down by Ligue 1 champions Lille.

However, they look likely to have more joy with Carlos.

As per the Daily Express, Diego Carlos is now willing to make the move and has told Sevilla he wants the transfer to St James’ Park.

The paper claims he is sold on the Saudi Arabian regime on Tyneside and believes in the long-term project they are putting together.

The Magpies saw an opening £28m offer for the 28-year-old rejected last week. However, reports indicate a £35m fee will twist Sevilla’s arm.

The LaLiga side also hope the sale of Diego Carlos will prevent the need for them to cash in on prized defender Jules Kounde.

Kounde is wanted by Chelsea, though their interest may wane if Antonio Rudier extends his stay.

Chelsea move for Newcastle target Hugo Ekitike

It’s not all good news for Newcastle, however.

Their efforts to bring in Reims striker Hugo Ekitike look destined to fail with Chelsea now on the scene.

As per Foot Mercato, Thomas Tuchel’s side are now in the driving seat to land the £33m-rated teenager.

The 19-year-old is emerging as the top attacking target for Eddie Howe’s side.

But they now look likely to have to shop elsewhere with the European champions seemingly pushing for his signing.

Any move to Chelsea will likely see the 19-year-old finish off the season with the Ligue 1 side.
