Kilmarnock Preview

It’s the magic of the Scottish Cup at Firhill this afternoon as Championship leaders Kilmarnock make the short trip up the M77 for the third round clash. Despite not having been in the same league as the Ayrshire side since season 1989/90, Killie have become a somewhat familiar opponent in cup competitions in recent years with today’s game being the fourth meeting of the sides in little over three and a half years.

Ahead of the game the club media team spoke to gaffer, Laurie Ellis, to get his thoughts. He said: “It’s a brilliant tie to be looking forward to and one which we have been looking forward to for a while. Whilst our recent results have left us wanting for more, we will go in to this cup tie with a really positive attitude and an approach towards the game that wants to see us progress to the next round.”

“We gave a good account of ourselves at Rugby Park just a couple of months ago and the players want to do the same this time round. We have a squad of very good, hard working players that are absolutely committed to getting positive results and this game is absolutely no different. We will go in to this game to give it our all from the first minute and to make a real cup tie of it from the start.”

“We are under no illusions about how difficult a game it will be. Kilmarnock are doing really well in the Championship and they have good strong squad so we know how much of a challenge it will be to get a result however we know we have real talent in our group who will be fully committed to the challenge.”

On the injury front Laurie confirmed that youngster Max Gillies misses out with tonsillitis adding that he may have one or two late calls to make on availability of others closer to kick off, depending on fitness. On a positive note Laurie was delighted to update that it is hoped winger Jai Quitongo will join the squad for some light training this coming week as he battles back from long term injury.
