‘Didn’t think I would ever say this’ – Pundit’s damning verdict of Spurs defeat

0 2

Andy Gray has insisted that the London derby between Tottenham and Chelsea was a case of men against boys, admitting he never thought he would see the Blues winning so comfortably against a top-six side.

There were plenty of encouraging signs for Tottenham in the first half as they pressed Chelsea high up the pitch and penned them into their own defensive third.

Despite dominating the midfield battle before the interval, the Lilywhites were not able to make their superiority count as the Chelsea backline held firm.

The away side then proceeded to blow Tottenham away in the second half as they put three past Hugo Lloris, strengthening their title credentials in the process.

Gray was extremely critical of the Lilywhites while lavishing praise on their London rivals, with the pundit admitting he never thought he would see such a dominant display by a side in a big derby.

The former Everton striker told beIN SPORT: “(Kane) never had a kick. I didn’t think I would ever say this in a Premier League match allegedly between two top-six sides in this league over the last ten years… But that was men against boys.

“I mean that. That’s how good Chelsea were in the second half, particularly in the second half. Total control of the game. Upped the tempo and intensity of it. Spurs could not live with them”

“The only surprise for me is that it is only three because it could have been six.”

The second half performance left a lot to be desired and it was evident that the Tottenham players’ struggled to recover from the sucker-punch of being 2-0 down early in the second half, particularly given the effort they had put in until that point and the nature of the goals Chelsea scored.

It did look like a case of ‘men vs boys’ in the final half-hour of the game but it might have been a different story had Spurs got a bit of luck and not conceded early in the second half.
