0 11

Napoli forward Lorenzo Insigne claims to have inside knowledge on why Tottenham failed in their bid to appoint Gennaro Gattuso as their new manager.

The Italy star played under Gattuso in Naples and claims that a “bit of a mess” was the reason why his old boss when not appointed in north London. Indeed, Spurs are still in the hunt for Jose Mourinho’s successor after the Portuguese was sacked back in April.

A number of big names have come and come, with Gattuso one of the latest. He looked primed for a move to Tottenham after resigning as Fiorentina boss after just 23 days in charge.

Speaking about Gattuso at Euro 2020, where Italy are due to face Austria in the last 16 on Saturday, Insigne was asked why his close friend remains out of work after meeting with Spurs: “We’ve texted each other. He told me there was a bit of mess, but now I am focused on the Euros, while he’s on holiday so I am not going to ask him such questions.”

The striker has not exactly revealed why Tottenham are a ‘mess’. However, it’s almost certainly a nod towards the uncertainty surrounding Harry Kane’s future.

The Spurs talisman wants a fresh challenge, although he’s currently being priced out of big-money exit.

As for Insigne, his own future is also being speculated, with Barcelona said to be keen.

The 30-year-old is due to enter the final year of his contract, and he added: “I have no regrets. I’ve fulfilled my dreams to play for Napoli and be the captain of the team. I am more than happy. Now I am focused on the Euros and then I’ll talk to the club.”

Meanwhile, Insigne has also suggested that his former Napoli teammate Jorginho deserves more recognition for his form with Chelsea and Italy.

Indeed, Insigne states the midfielder should be in the mix for the Ballon d’Or. He said: “We have quality players. You talked about Jorginho and it’s correct.

“He had spent some fantastic years at Chelsea and I am proud to have him in our team.
