Opinion: Goals-per-game career analysis – Most prolific players in the Spurs squad

0 2

I always find it interesting to analyse the numbers, especially when you can see them so clearly. I wanted to take a look at our squad’s GPG (goals-per-game) statistics and see who are the most prolific goalscorers in a Spurs shirt.

For the sake of this article, I have taken the figures from the players’ whole careers, including any time spent in youth sides and at other clubs.

Joe Rodon: 0 – The only player in our senior team to never register a senior goal is Welshman Joe Rodon, although you would expect that statistic to change as he grows older.

Ben Davies: 0.02 – Fellow Welshman Ben Davies is not a prolific goalscorer by any means, and is much more a conventional left-back than an attacking one. He did score against Stoke City in the Carabao Cup this season though.

Harry Winks: 0.03 – The first midfielder to appear is youth academy graduate Harry Winks, who has registered just 7 career goals (4 for the Spurs senior team), including an incredible cross-come-shot against Ludogorets in our ill-fated Europa League campaign this season.

Davinson Sanchez: 0.04 – Our least prolific centre-back beyond Rodon is Davinson Sanchez, with the Colombian only ever scoring three goals for the Lilywhites, although two of those came in our 5-4 defeat to Everton in the fifth round of this seasons FA Cup.

Eric Dier: 0.04 – Having spent the majority of his career to this point playing as a central midfielder, you might expect Dier to have scored more goals, especially having taken on a chunk of our free-kick duties recently. Nonetheless, Dier has only registered 14 career goals, with 11 of those coming in white.

Danny Rose: 0.04 – A forgotten man at Spurs this season, Danny Rose was a trusted player under Mauricio Pochettino for his tenure at Spurs, but only ever scored 10 goals for the club, including a wonder-strike on debut.

Toby Alderweireld: 0.06 – The Belgian is often seen frequenting the opposition area on corners, and has been known to pop in a few goals here and there, accumulating 27 career goals, 9 for Spurs.

Japhet Tanganga: 0.06 – Although he has never scored for the senior team, Tanganga scored 6 goals in 100 appearances for the youth side, taking his Goals Per Game to 0.06.

Sergio Reguilon: 0.06 Yet to get off the mark at Spurs, the Spanish left-back has scored just 12 goals in 188 career appearances; a return we hope will improve during his tenure at Spurs.

Serge Aurier: 0.06 – Similarly to Reguilon, Aurier hasn’t found the net as often as perhaps he should as an attacking right-back, only finding the net on 8 occasions for Spurs (21 in his career).

Tanguy Ndombele: 0.07 – A somewhat surprising statistic considering the goals he has scored this season, but Tanguy Ndombele is not anywhere near as prolific as I expected to find him, only scoring 14 career goals in 203 appearances. Although his overall return for Spurs is much better, scoring 8 goals in 73 appearances.

Pierre Emile Højbjerg: 0.07 – Only scoring once so far for Spurs, that rocket against Liverpool earlier this season, Pierre has scored a total of 20 goals throughout his career, although clearly, that was not what we brought him in too add to the squad.

Moussa Sissoko: 0.07 – having scored 36 goals in 353 appearances before coming to Spurs at a GPG score of 0.1, Sissoko has dropped off since joining Spurs, scoring at 0.02 GPG since joining.

Matt Doherty: 0.09 – Another player yet to score for Spurs, Matt Doherty was often amongst the goals for Wolves, even scoring against his future club in the 2019/20 season.

Giovanni Lo Celso: 0.15 – A big jump up to Giovanni Lo Celso, who has scored 7 goals in 64 appearances for Spurs, including against Man. City in our 2-0 win earlier this season.

Erik Lamela: 0.17 – The Argentinian has scored 36 goals for Spurs in 257 appearances, but has been slightly more prolific throughout his career, tallying up a total of 62 career goals in 361 appearances.

Steven Bergwijn: 0.21 – It seems like a long time ago since Bergwijn’s debut goal against City last season, and that is 1 of only 3 goals he has scored for the Lilywhites in his 49 appearances. I am hoping to see a return to his form from PSV Eindhoven, where he scored 52 goals in 245 games at a GPG score of 0.21.

Lucas Moura: 0.21 – This one surprised me a tad, as Moura has always seemed to be in and around the goals for us, but has only actually scored 32 times for Spurs. Who will ever forget his hat-trick against Ajax in 2019?

Dele Alli: 0.26 – 65 goals in 248 games for Spurs sees Dele Alli the first player to average 1 goal in 4 games throughout his career.

Gareth Bale: 0.34 – Bale has scored 180 goals in 530 appearances throughout his stellar career, with 70 of those coming for Spurs in his two stints at the club. He has scored 14 goals for us this season in 31 appearances, at a GPG of 0.45; second only to Harry Kane this season.

Heung-Min Son: 0.36 – The fan-favourite South Korean has scored 172 career goals (107 for Spurs), averaging just over 1 goal every 3 games. He shows absolutely no signs of slowing down either.

Carlos Vinicius: 0.48 – A real sign of his potential, Carlos Vinicius has scored 70 goals in 145 career appearances, matching his GPG throughout his career this season at Spurs, where he has scored 10 goals in 22 appearances.

Harry Kane: 0.6 – Undoubtedly the most prolific goalscorer in the squad, and probably the most prolific I’ve ever seen. Harry Kane scores at an astounding 3 goals every 5 games, a artistic even more impressive when you consider he has done this over 412 total appearances throughout his career. Who knows where he will finish up by the time he hangs up the boots.
